OpenLaszlo 4 Programming Tutorial

Posted in General, Documentation, Development at 1:19 pm by jgrandy

OpenLaszlo architect and ultimate insider Adam Wolff has recorded a screencast version of his wonderful OpenLaszlo programming tutorial, available below. Besides being a tour de force of ‘vim’ text-editing acrobatics, this tutorial demonstrates construction of a simple client-server application in OpenLaszlo 4, and highlights several of the most exciting features of the OL4 release. The video is about 40 minutes long, and best viewed at full resolution. Enjoy!

Interesting but I need an IDE, I’d like design graphical interfaces with a graphical tool. And I dont want to learn tag names to produce graphical interfaces and his properties.

I am very impressed. This is my first look into openlaszlo. Before going anywhere into demos etc. as a developer I headed straight for this video which is a programming tutorial. I am so bowled away that I am going to check out the licensing policy here and start with some development ASAP.
I won’t have to hire a flash developer anytime soon. Though I still need to figure out how a flash designer can modify the look and feel on the client. It does help abstract the programming and output essential for web development. I am going to the forums . Tada

Sebo, OpenLaszlo is available from the main OpenLaszlo website, www.openlaszlo.org, from the downloads page.

Ioan, blip.tv serves the screencast in either FLV (Flash video) or Quicktime. Can you view other blip.tv content? If not, perhaps there is a blip.tv compatibility and we’ll join you in letting them know.

[…] After watching the OpenLaszlo 4 Programming Tutorial Screencast, I’m convinced that Laszlo is more capable than Flex, and there is less proprietary code to learn since you use Javascript instead of Actionscript. It’s all ECMA and XML, so I guess at some point it becomes 6 vs. a half dozen, but I will mention one small caveat: iPhone compatible. Oh yes, I’ve seen the first iPhone app in Laszlo, and it’s pretty and touch-screen happy. (I think it goes without saying that if it works on iPhone, it can work with all major browsers) […]

    Excellent!!!

I looked at OL about a year ago and unfortunately lost interest. Now I need to develop an application and was comparing Flex and OL. Definitely going with OL. I’ve done some PHP development some time back and now will have to learn LZX, JS, XML and XPath.

    One major request. TRAINING materials

I know there are training courses on offer but like a LOT of OL adopters, I don’t stay in the US (Cape Town, South Africa). PLEASE make these courses available on DVD or downloadable FLV like the demo….I’m more than willing to pay for it as I learn a lot quickier watching a course/video than reading thru a manual and can’t wait to get started.

    Again, EXCELLENT product
    Thanks

The tutorial is excellent and presentation is awesome!

The tutorial is very simeple and still has touched upon the topics like event handling, implementing constraints, lazy replication and the OO features of Lazlo… Awesome!

I looked at Adobe Flex and now I looked at OpenLaszlo… it makes no sense to look at Flex or Silverlight anymore.
